What’s good
- Smooth floral opening
- Warm rum, leather and tobacco
- Sweet but never overpowering
- Accessible unisex scent
What I’d change
- Lighter than you might expect
Chris and me went into Leeds yesterday on my Birthday and whilst wandering around, I decided I wanted to go and sniff out some new fragrances in Manchester’s Harvey Nichols; just to have a see what was out there. Here you’ll always find the most gorgeous and luxurious niche fragrance brands, many of which are exclusives or at least very limited distribution, and Maison Martin Margiela is one of these brands. Chris then spontaneously treated me to my very own bottle of Jazz Club.

From the fashion house of Martin Margiela, Jazz Club is one of 7 ‘replica’ fragrances that take locations and situations, turning their essences into fragrance. This includes: Barber Shop, Tea Escape, Flower Market, Beach Walk, Lipstick On, and Jazz Club; inspired by a 2013 Brooklyn, New York club.
I’m a fan of sweeter more amber-like fragrances and make no bones about my love of scents such as Le Male, A*Men, Pi, Pour Le Soir and Lune Feline.
What Replica Jazz Club smells like
Created by Alienor Massenet, Jazz Club has 3 feature notes of Rum, Leather and Tobacco. There’s then a top trio of pink peppercorns, citrus and neroli. The rum is intertwined with orange, bitter orange and sage. The base of leather and tobacco is then blended with styrax, vanilla, tonka bean and vetiver.
It’s lighter than I expected and the neroli and sage definitely play very key parts with a smooth floral introduction. Then as it begins to dry down, the tobacco and leathers start to come through the sweetness but it never delves into the darkest depths, instead staying in the mid-ground. Jazz Club is an example of male/unisex at its best and most accessible.
Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club is a 100ml eau de toilette, currently around £120.
