Alvarez Gomez Agua de Colonia Barberia Combing Water is a lightweight, soft-hold, spray gel that gentle fixes combed hair in place – fragranced with Alvarez Gomez Agua de Colonia Barberia.

The Alvarez Gomez Agua de Colonia Barberia fragrance is composed of bitter orange, bergamot, ginger and lemon; a heart of rhubarb, labdanum and coriander with a base of white musk, cedar and sandalwood. It’s utterly refreshing and unmistakably masculine.

With hair still slightly damp, spray a generous amount directly onto the hair and brush through. I’ve just been brushing it back into a sort of Gomez Addams slick-back – no pun intended with Gomez there.

When it dries it leaves a healthy, silky sheen; it doesn’t hold much definition as mentioned it’s a soft-hold fix, but it does keep hair in place and in shape. Before this I’d been resorting to pinning my enormously long fringe back back with a rather fetching, if not slightly tittish, black alice band (if Beckham wore one then so can I).

Alvarez Gomez Agua de Colonia Barberia Combing Water can also be used as a style-prep, much in the same way as my favourite prep product, Phomollient by Aveda. Again, spray into damp hair, and then blow-dry through on a medium/high heat using a large paddle brush.

For a quiff: blow-dry, with the concentrator attached, in the desired quiff direction (mine is to my right for example), then in the opposite direction (left), then finally in the desired direction once more (right) – this will help give it lift. For a straight, flat finish: blow dry all your hair right, then to the left then straight forward; repeat until dry using always the paddle brush.

Alvarez Gomez Agua de Barberia Combing Water is thankfully available in the UK here from Mankind at just £15.50 for 175ml (it’s €15.50 here in Spain so that’s not such a massive price difference from Mankind this time). I’ve been using it for a month and I’ve only used around a quarter of the bottle; I’ll definitely be replacing this one when it runs out.
