The Unstoppable Braun Series 9 Electric Shaver Launching July 1st

When it comes to electric shaving, I’ve made no bones about the fact that in the past few months, I’ve become a Braun electric convert. I have fallen in love with foil head razors but finally here’s one that gives a close shave, not only comparable to a rotary head, but to a wet shave! I kid you not.

The challenge of shaving

Grooming for men is a challenge and some have it worse than others. I’m lucky that I don’t get that much facial hair and I sadly joke that it’s akin to that of a middle aged, menopausal woman. Unfortunately with that, my skin remains pretty sensitive; are you the same? I get ingrowns so easily and my skin becomes raw very easily. Any of this sounding familiar?

Why the Braun Series 9?

What’s in the box

In brief, the Braun Series 9 is an electric razor with 4 independent cutters, each with a unique function, operating with sonic technology (dubbed SyncroSonic) that delivers 40,000 cuts per minute. That’s right; s***t just got real!Braun Series 9 Razor in Travel Case with BrushBraun Series 9 Box Contents

As if that’s not enough, as well as the razor, you also get a cleansing charging station that takes relatively inexpensive cleansing cartridges to periodically clean your razor. The Series 9 also includes a gorgeous hard PU leather carry case, charging wire (you don’t have to charge from the station) and cleaning brush.Braun Series 9 Charging Station and PodBraun Series 9 Clean and Renew Cleansing Pod

The technology behind the Braun Series 9

As mentioned, the Series 9 has 4 individual heads that each have a unique function. The first, Hyperlift & Cut trimmer, lifts the hairs before cutting them and accounts for 50% of hairs most often missed by other razors.

The second trimmer or the Direct & Cut trimmer directs, aligns and cuts the hairs that are longer and multi-directional (the ones that point all over the shop). Finally the two opposite OptiFoil trimmers/cutters with specially optimised holes give a gentle, close shave.Braun Series 9 Diagram

As well as the trimmers each floating and moving independently, the entire head curves to the contours of the face and neck. But, at the click of a button, you can lock the head into place and then manually adjust the position yourself. The focus is on comfort and every single male groomer has a totally individual preference.Braun Series 9 Replaceable Razor Head

The trimmer head unit is also replaceable at around £30/£40 and should ideally be replaced every 18-24 months.

Reverse trimmer/clipper

There’s a trimmer at the back that can be used for pretty much anything really. It’s very effective, whereas you might be used to pushing reverse trimmers/clippers on other razors closer to the skin; be warned, this will shave you bald if you’re not careful.Braun Series 9 Reverse Trimmer

Finally there’s a countdown timer. Right, ok, so I haven’t gotten to the bottom of this, but all the ones at the event had countdown numbers on them and then have a bar system showing it’s charge when plugged in. Now, mine constantly has the bar system and I’ve not seen the numbers – I’ve asked; read the Braun manual inside and out as well as googling it for previous Braun electric shaver models – seriously not a clue. But when your Series 9 arrives, it’ll have a countdown.

It’ll also let you know when it needs cleaning and the charging/cleaning base station will only clean for as long as it needs to. It’s rather clever (well, it’s German, so obviously it’s clever).Braun Series 9 Countdown Timer

Benefits of the Series 9

OK, so it’s not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, so I guess you’re probably reading this to find out why it’s worth the investment and it really is an investment. I cannot recommend the Series 9 razor enough and in summation, here are my final reasons why:

Often, when an electric razor doesn’t cut closely or has only one/two sets of trimmers, you have to run it over the same area of skin again, and again, and again. This causes irritation, redness and sensitivity on the skin causing both visible and under skin damage. The Braun Series 9 works very hard to ensure that you rarely have to run it over the same area more than once to ensure the hair is cut.

Not that I wanted to, because I really want to keep this for a long, long time, but I threw it about a bit to give it the Thom Test. It’s seriously unflinching and one fabulous thing that one of the designers at the launch event said was “no part is an accident; every single element has been purposely designed”. This is obvious. It’s weighty, very easy on the eye and one of the most ergonomic devices to hold.Braun Series 9 in hand with ergonomic design

Unfortunately, beards are still remaining on trend. Some people suit them well whilst others should just stop. But, just because you have a beard, it doesn’t mean that you should neglect to keep it trimmed. I watched in awe as my friend Ross got his beard professionally manicured by a top male male groomer at the Braun Series 9 launch event.

Wet & Dry

Simply put, you can use this in or out of the shower. It’s really a personal preference as I prefer to shave with dry hair, but I know many prefer it under running water. The option is totally yours which it often isn’t with many electric razors.

Most often with any product that comes out of Germany, it has been tested, double tested, triple tested, scrapped, re-designed 42 times, then tested all over again. Even torture testing the Braun Series 9 on 3 day beards produced amazing results in their clinical trials. This is no weakling.

I’ve not properly timed how long it takes to charge, but it seems bloody fast. You’ll get around 60 minutes of shaving time which is absolutely plenty. Most of the trips I’ve taken it on over the last month, I’ve been more than happy to leave the charging cable at home – it’s just not needed.

Closeness of shave

So I’ve talked about the trimmers individually, but what about the shave. The Braun Series 9 has the appearance of a wet shave and if you gently smooth your hand over where you’ve shaved, it’ll feel like a wet shave. Only when you brush in the opposite direction to the hairs will you feel a little bit of stubble. But having the appearance of a wet shave without any of the micro-incisions and skin damage is a dream come true really.

Where to buy

The Braun Series 9 shaver goes on sale officially as of July 1st retailing at £249.99 for the Braun Series 9-9040s Wet & Dry (black/blue and comes without charging/cleansing station) and £329.99 for the Braun Series 9-9095cc (silver and comes with the charging station). Although I found an awesome pre-launch special offer below.

Thanks for the review. You had good results with just a single pass over parts of the skin? Looks very intriguing.

Average Chap

I have a beard so this doesn’t work for me but part of that is to do with my sensitive skin and the irritation from wet shaves. I tried a foil once, and only once. If I switch back to a clean shaven face, which I believe will be the fashion soon, then this could be a perfect purchase. Cheers Thom.

A-ha! But it does work for beards. At the launch event my friend Ross had his bushy beard amazingly manicured with the Series 9. Seriously good results too.

Amen to the sensitivity bit, my skin hates my current electric razor because I have to go over the same area a few times. Looks like I may need to be upgrading soon!
