L’Occitane Verbena Shower Gel Review: The Smell of Summer

Some reviews you write with a spreadsheet head on. This one comes from somewhere less rational. L’Occitane’s Verbena Shower Gel gets 3.5 from me, and I want to be clear from the start that the missing star and a half has nothing to do with the smell, which is one of the best things you can pour over yourself for £18.

I picked my latest bottle up in the middle of a heatwave, which is exactly when verbena makes sense. This is the scent of my younger summers, and every wash gives me a little of that back. I’ve loved L’Occitane’s verbena for years (the Citrus Verbena eau de toilette got me first), so treat this as a review from a repeat customer rather than a first impression.

How it feels (and the thin problem)

Let’s deal with the star and a half. This has always been a thin formula, going back years, and the current bottle is no different. It’s closer to a cordial than a gel. Tip it into your palm and a lot arrives at once, and if you don’t get it working into a lather quickly it simply splashes away down the drain, taking your £18 with it a few pence at a time.

Once you do get it moving, it behaves. It lathers brightly, cleans well and rinses off fast with no residue. There’s nothing wrong with how it washes; there’s plenty wrong with how much of it you can waste getting there. A shower puff sorts most of this, more on that below.

The scent: proper verbena

Verbena, if you’ve not met it outside herbal tea, is lemony but not lemon. It’s greener, finer, a little sherbety, with none of the washing-up-liquid sharpness cheap lemon fragrances carry. L’Occitane build theirs around verbena grown in Provence (organically, by the brand’s own account), rounded out with essential oils of orange, geranium and lemon tree. The current bottles wear the French name, Verveine, on the label; same product, same scent.

The result is bright, clean and properly sunny. It smells like a continental summer: cold drinks, warm stone, the first shower after a day outside. And it is so unisex it’s unbelievable. Nothing gendered in it at all, no “sport” posturing, no soapy floral, just citrus done beautifully. One bottle happily serves a whole household.

What’s in it, and what’s worth believing

The cleansing base is sodium laureth sulfate supported by coco-glucoside and cocamidopropyl betaine, two gentler coconut-derived surfactants. SLES has a worse reputation than it deserves (it’s the milder cousin of the sulfate people usually mean when they worry), and blended like this it’s fine for most skin. It’s also part of why the product behaves the way it does: a base like this gives you that quick, bright, fast-rinsing foam, and it doesn’t need to be thick to work. I just wish they’d thickened it anyway.

On the plant side there’s verbena (Lippia citriodora) leaf extract, gardenia fruit extract and vitamin E, and I like seeing all three. I’m always happier when a brand builds around real botanicals rather than a lab-only fragrance. Be honest with yourself about what they do in a wash-off product though: contact time is seconds, so the extracts are here for character rather than treatment. The joy of this product is the scent, not a skincare claim, and L’Occitane, to their credit, don’t really pretend otherwise.

One genuinely useful note: because the fragrance is built on natural citrus materials, the label carries the usual allergen lineup (limonene, citral, geraniol, linalool and friends). Most people will never notice. If your skin is properly fragrance-reactive, this is not the shower gel to test it on.

How to use it without wasting it

Less than you think, always. Tip a small amount onto a shower puff or a damp flannel rather than straight into your palm; the lather goes twice as far and the bottle stops emptying itself. Straight into hands works too, but be quick about it.

Who it’s for

Anyone who wants their shower to lift their mood, frankly. It suits every skin type bar the very fragrance-sensitive, it suits everyone regardless of gender, and it particularly suits summer; this smells slightly wrong in January and absolutely right in July. If you buy shower gel purely on performance per pound, the thin formula will annoy you and there are better-value washes. If you buy the odd product for how it makes you feel, this is one of the good ones. It’s my comfort buy, and I don’t regret a bottle of it.

How it compares

Within L’Occitane’s own shelf: Citrus Verbena is the sportier, icier sibling, sharper than this one’s sunny garden. The Almond Shower Oil is the opposite texture, a rich oil that froths into a soft milk, and the one to pick if your skin runs dry or the thinness here would drive you mad. And if you want the scent to last beyond the bathroom, the Citrus Verbena eau de toilette covers the same territory in fragrance form.
