4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser Original Eau De Cologne

Why haven’t I reviewed this on the site before? No seriously, why? It has been in my life for a very long time, being one of my oldest and best loved fragrances. It’s the ultimate men’s fragrance and how all men should naturally smell.

This fragrance is no less than 220 years old and is the grandfather of men’s cologne. Its creator, Wilhelm Mülhens, was said to have received a secret recipe for “aqua mirabilis” as a wedding gift from an Carthusian monk, said to have healing properties. This recipe was developed and went on to become the internationally famous 4711; to this day it’s exact formula is a well kept secret.

It’s top notes consist of orange, peach, basil, bergamot and lemon. The middle notes are cyclamen, lily, melon, jasmine and bulgarian rose. Finally the base notes are comprised of patchouli, tahitian vetiver, musk, sandalwood, oakmoss and cedar. It’s the perfect balance of light floral delicacy, bold and powerful base woods topped off by sharp, mouth watering citrus.

It’s fresh, noticeable and smooth, forget your Hugo Boss, Diesel, Joop and Paul Smith, this is where it’s at, for the real man. But what else do I love about it? The price! I still can’t get over how low the price is, particularly on the continent. You can often pick up a 50ml bottle for less than £12; Boots have it here for £11.49!

I find it a bit on the heavy side, but there’s a new, lighter version of 4711 out which is nice.
