This post was updated on the 25th January 2024 with all images re-processed, ‘cool’ photo filters removed and new, unseen images from my trip. I hope this serves as a bit of a time capsule for Lush fans and enthusiasts.
So, what exactly is the essence of the LUSH Kitchen? Imagine a place where the limits of cosmetic creativity are continually tested, where the boundaries of beauty innovation are expanded with each new creation. That’s the LUSH Kitchen.
This was also the same trip where I was so lucky to spend time with Mark Constantine and spend a day in the Lush factory!
What is Lush Kitchen?
It’s a unique concept in the beauty industry, combining the charm of artisanal craftsmanship with the excitement of limited-edition releases. Here, small batches of products are meticulously crafted, often resurrecting beloved classics from LUSH’s history or experimenting with entirely new ideas. The LUSH Kitchen isn’t just about making products; it’s about creating experiences, memories, and connections.
Each product from the Kitchen tells a story – of natural ingredients, ethical sourcing, and the artistry of LUSH’s creative minds. The batches are small, and the offerings change daily, making every product an exclusive treasure. It’s a model that not only champions exclusivity but also ensures that the utmost care and attention are given to every item that leaves the Kitchen.

My Hands-On Experience
I had the opportunity to craft two new products, formulated by Lush for me to make for the very first time. Designed for the modern, grooming-conscious man: the Kalamazoo Face and Beard Wash and the Cup o’ Coffee Exfoliating Face Mask.

Guided by the meticulous recipes and assisted by the ever-charming Peter from the Kitchen crew, we meticulously blended truly fresh ingredients like fresh pineapples and ground coffee to create these exceptional grooming essentials.

Chopping, Squeezing, Blending and Pouring
My adventure in the LUSH Kitchen, alongside Peter and the rest of the team, was an eye-opener in the truest sense. It shattered my preconceived notions of cosmetic manufacturing, which I had always imagined as a sterile, lab-like environment and with most brands, still is.
Instead, I found myself in a space that was a perfect blend of creativity and precision, where professionalism coexisted with artistic flair and every drop of eccentric, Lush fun you can imagine.

As we embarked on creating the Kalamazoo Face and Beard Wash and the Cup o’ Coffee Exfoliating Face Mask, both designed for my visit and I was struck by the authenticity and quality of the process.
The ingredients were top-notch, taken from the main factory next door, ranging from organic agave syrup to caffeine powder – a testament to LUSH’s commitment to natural, sustainable ingredients.
It was refreshing to see that the ingredients list was devoid of artificial additives; almost everything we used could have been found in a well-stocked pantry.

The Cup o’ Coffee mask, in particular, was a revelation. A simple yet effective ingredients list – organic agave syrup, kaolin, glycerine, coffee infusion, and a few other naturals – highlighted how beauty products could be both effective and skin-kind. There was an honesty in the manufacturing process that was truly admirable. No mysterious white powders or untouchable compounds; it was akin to an elaborate culinary session, but for skincare.
In the Lush Kitchen, I wasn’t just a bystander. I was fully immersed in the process, armed with an array of knives – spinning knives, blending knives, and more knives. The level of trust given to me was daunting. I was slicing, dicing, and blending, fully involved in the creation of these new products. It was a hands-on experience that showed me the essence of Lush’s small-batch production philosophy.

The environment in the Kitchen was far from the industrial scale often associated with cosmetic manufacturing. It felt like a step up from a home kitchen – intimate yet equipped with incredibly powerful machinery and a variety of scales for precise measurements. This setup ensures that each product crafted in the Lush Kitchen is unique, made with care and had huge attention to detail – it’s not soulless robotic machinery (nor is the main factory to be honest!)
This experience gave me a new perspective on Lush’s products. When you order from the LUSH Kitchen, you’re not just getting a product; you’re receiving something that’s been crafted with passion, precision, and a personal touch. It’s reassuring to know that these items are made by individuals who are genuinely invested in what they’re creating – and not by, as I jokingly thought, some “idiot blogger with knives!”

Wrapping up my visit to the LUSH Kitchen, I’ve got to say, as a life-long Lush super-fan, it was a pretty cool experience. It wasn’t just about mixing up some face wash and mask; it was about getting a real feel for how Lush operates behind the scenes. Working with Peter and getting hands-on with all those ingredients was as fun as I’d hoped it would be. It’s one thing to use these products, but seeing how they’re made from scratch? That’s something else.
Leaving the Kitchen, I felt like I’d seen a different side of the beauty industry. It’s easy to forget that there’s real work and creativity behind the products we use. It’s not every day you get to chop, blend, and create with a team that’s genuinely into what they’re doing. All in all, not a bad way to spend a day!
