Then I Met You: The Giving Essence Review

P2030346 Enhanced NR

I recently came across Then I Met You’s The Giving Essence, first spotting it via a mention on LinkedIn, of all places, before Cult Beauty decided I needed to see it again in an ad.

It really piqued my interest, initially because of the beautifully photogenic packaging; then further investigation of its ingredients promising hydration, brightness, and an all-around improved skin texture.

With skincare, there’s always a bit of skepticism, especially when products promise the moon. But given the buzz and my own curiosity about whether it could live up to the claims–and for £51 but with an extra 15% off on Cult Beauty–I decided to dive in and give it a thorough trial. So, here’s a closer look at what this essence offers and my take on whether it delivers.

The Ingredients

Let’s unpack the ingredients list to understand the science behind its skincare promises of hydration, brightness, and improved skin texture.

  • Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate & Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate: These fermented ingredients are the backbone of the essence, known for their ability to nourish and fortify the skin’s barrier, enhancing hydration and resilience.
  • Niacinamide: This skincare enthusiast’s favorite, niacinamide, or Vitamin B3, has multiple benefits. It tackles everything from reducing pore size and fine lines to improving skin tone and barrier function. Its also super-calming and has been a life-saver for me over the last year due to very skin-disrupting medications.
  • Ellagic Acid: Perhaps less familiar to some, ellagic acid is a natural antioxidant found in berries. It’s celebrated for its skin-brightening properties and ability to protect against UV damage and collagen degradation, all without harming the skin’s cells.
  • Polyglutamic Acid: A hydration-hero, polyglutamic acid works by locking moisture into the skin, complementing niacinamide’s barrier-strengthening effects. It’s a key player in ensuring the skin remains plump and dewy.
  • A blend of Berry Extracts: From black chokeberry to raspberry and blueberry, these extracts are not just for their antioxidant power. They contribute to the essence’s ability to fend off environmental stressors while boosting the natural luminosity.
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract & Sodium Hyaluronate: Soothing and hydrating, these ingredients ensure the essence provides immediate relief to dry or irritated skin, making it feel refreshed and revitalised.

My Take on The Ingredients:

The thoughtfully curated ingredients list of The Giving Essence speaks to its potential as a skincare powerhouse. It’s also for all skin types and from the driest to the oiliest, this gives hydration that’ll blend really well with your other products.

The combination of fermented filtrates, niacinamide, and a mix of acids and natural extracts promises a well-rounded approach to skin health. It’s clear that Then I Met You aimed to create a product that goes beyond surface-level beauty and goes well beyond its glossy-branding to focus on nourishing and protecting the skin. I can completely attest to it.

The inclusion of ellagic acid is particularly interesting, offering a natural approach to skin brightening and protection that doesn’t rely on harsh chemicals or potential irritants!

Who are Then I Met You?

Charlotte Cho, the brand founder, was inspired to start Then I Met You after experiencing the depth and effectiveness of Korean skincare during her time in South Korea. Her goal was to create a brand that blends traditional Korean ingredients, of which this is really obvious with The Giving Essence, with the latest in skincare science, focusing on genuine skin health and a mindful skincare routine.

With Then I Met You, Cho aims to go beyond the surface, encouraging a daily ritual that nurtures the skin and soul with very sensorial products. The brand believes it’s about making skincare a thoughtful part of the day, using ingredients that have stood the test of time but backed by modern research to ensure they’re truly effective.

How I Find The Then I Met You – The Giving Essence

After incorporating The Giving Essence into my skincare routine and continuing to do so, I’ve gathered some key observations worth sharing

Application and Absorption

The essence requires about 5-10 drops, depending on your skin’s level of dehydration post-cleanse. What impresses me is how quickly it absorbs into the skin, a feature I attribute to the thoughtful design of the bottle, which allows for controlled dispensing akin to high-end products like La Mer–The Treatment Lotion.

Scent

There’s a whisper of a berry scent that’s so subtle, you might miss it if you’re not paying attention. I’m still on the fence about whether it’s genuinely there or if my knowledge of its berry extracts is playing tricks on my senses. Nonetheless, after a week of daily use, I’m leaning towards the former.

Compatibility With Other Products

One notable benefit is how it seems to amplify the absorption and efficacy of subsequent skincare products. Anything applied on top of the essence feels like it’s drawn deeper into the skin, enhancing overall hydration and calmness. My current obsession with niacinamide only fuels my appreciation for this essence, given its soothing and skin-enhancing properties.

Value for Money

Considering the elegant glass packaging, the luxurious texture, and the roster of high-quality ingredients, The Giving Essence offers exceptional value for £51– although again, I found a 15% off voucher with Cult Beauty and it’s not uncommon to get that all the time one way or another. It’s not just another addition to my skincare regime but a standout product that delivers on its promises without an exorbitant price tag.

Usage Tips

For optimal results, I apply the essence to my face and neck while my skin is still warm from washing, using 5-10 drops for full coverage. I’ve found that waiting about 30 seconds before applying my next skincare product allows the essence to fully penetrate and set the stage for enhanced product synergy.

In sum, The Giving Essence has earned its place in my daily skincare lineup, not just for its immediate benefits but for its potential long-term impact on my skin’s health and appearance. Give it a try!
