Embarking on a skincare journey after a year of medication that left my skin on the brink of constant irritation and sensitivity, I’ve become particularly discerning about the products I introduce to my routine. Enter The Ordinary’s Soothing & Barrier Support Serum, a concoction that caught my eye not just for its astonishingly vibrant pink hue reminiscent of childhood medicines (Calpol!) but for its promising blend of ingredients aimed at calming, hydrating, and fortifying the skin’s barrier.

With my skin’s heightened propensity for reactions, finding a serum that could address these concerns without adding fuel to the fire was paramount.

Deep Dive: Full Ingredients of The Ordinary’s Soothing & Barrier Support Serum

Building on the key components discussed, the full ingredient list of The Ordinary’s Soothing & Barrier Support Serum unveils a comprehensive formulation designed to cater to sensitive and irritated skin. Let’s break down some additional noteworthy ingredients:

  • Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid, Madecassic Acid (Centella Asiatica Extracts): These compounds, derived from the Centella Asiatica plant, are used for their healing properties, boosting skin repair and resilience.
  • Naringenin: Found in citrus fruits, this flavonoid offers anti-inflammatory benefits, helping to calm the skin and reduce redness.
  • Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12): Adds to the serum’s skin-soothing and redness-reducing capabilities while contributing to its unique pink hue!
  • Panthenyl Triacetate: A vitamin B5 derivative known for its moisturizing and softening properties, enhancing skin’s smoothness and hydration.
  • Niacinamide: This vitamin B3 derivative is a cornerstone of the serum’s formula and a staple of my own skincare routine. It’s revered for its multifaceted skin benefits. It plays a crucial role in strengthening the skin’s barrier, minimizing the appearance of pores, reducing redness, and enhancing overall skin texture.
  • Epigallocatechin Gallatyl Glucoside (EGCG), Gallyl Glucoside, Propyl Gallate (Gallic Acid Derivatives): Powerful antioxidants that protect the skin from free radical damage and help to soothe and calm irritated skin.
  • Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract: Offers additional anti-inflammatory benefits, further helping to soothe irritated skin.

Preservatives and Stabilizers

  • Dehydroacetic Acid, P-Anisic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin: These safe ingredients ensure the serum remains safe and effective for use over time, preventing the growth of microbes.

Texture Enhancers

  • Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol: Work together to improve the serum’s texture and enhance skin hydration.

pH Adjusters:

  • Sodium Hydroxide: Adjusts the serum’s pH to ensure it’s compatible with the skin’s natural pH, enhancing its efficacy and comfort during application. Again, very inert and skin-safe.

This clearly meticulously curated blend (not a surprise given The Ordinary’s track record) not only targets immediate concerns like hydration and redness but also works to strengthen the skin’s barrier over time.

How I Found It

Diving into The Ordinary’s Soothing & Barrier Support Serum brought back lovely childhood memories, thanks to its striking pink color reminiscent of strawberry-flavored medicines like Calpol. Beyond the nostalgia, what really stands out is how well it deals my skin’s increased demands—offering deep hydration and calming without the heaviness of oils, crucial for my dehydration-prone skin.

The ingredients list reads like a dream for anyone seeking serious skin barrier support, with niacinamide leading the charge. Yet, while the serum’s benefits are clear, The Ordinary’s standard packaging leaves room for improvement for this particular product. The dropper struggles to dispense the generous amount needed–a pump would make application much smoother and more convenient.

Despite the packaging hiccup, the serum’s quick absorption and the immediate softness and smoothness it imparts are impressive. And for those wondering about the pink tint—it vanishes on application, leaving no trace behind.

In all, this serum has secured its spot in my skincare lineup. It’s a go-to for effective hydration and barrier reinforcement, even as I hold out hope for a packaging upgrade in the future.
