I was more than excited when I clapped eyes on the title of this book and I assure you, it doesn’t disappoint. The Marie Antoinette Diet: Eat Cake and Still Lose Weight is a fabulous assortment of “oh, of course!” moments rather than a pointless diet book filled with irrational and unreasonable ‘tricks’ that are unrealistic and not conducive to helping you make and stick to healthy eating choices.

I have recently been getting into a bit of a massive health kick. Since last Summer I’ve lost over 2 stone and I’ll be honest, I could have done it a lot healthier. I find I just don’t eat, but then when I do eat, I don’t choose the right things. I’ve also, as of the last 6 weeks, been hitting the gym hard, doing 2 and a half hours every other day with around 30 minutes of cardio and 2 hours of solid weights. This has really been pushing me to eat well as my body seems to be craving more of the right sort of thing and so I’ve turned to The Marie Antoinette Diet to keep me on the straight and narrow; also, I have to balance out the butchness of the gym and all those protein shakes.

So I’ve been sitting down, with my Cire Trudon Trianon candle burning in the background (inspired by Le Petit Trianon, Marie Antoinette’s abode in Versailles), and taking in the fabulous and self-experienced advice of Karen Wheeler, a fashion industry veteran and francophile écrivain.

The The Marie Antoinette Diet covers 5 principal theories with explanations and the science behind them backed up by research from health professionals, doctors and dieticians. Karen then goes on to The Practice with such fabulous headers as 1. You can eat caked but do so early on in the day“. How fabulous is that? Also, which is no real surprise if you think about it, Karen recommends that homemade cakes are better than shop bought which can usually contain hydrogenated fats, monoglycerides and diglycirides; also, it can be a bit of a reality check as you watch exactly how much fat and sugar goes into cake baking.

I don’t want to give away too much on The Marie Antoinette Diet because it’s really quite a fabulous book that feels like you’ve been let into an industry secret. It’s also a fairly thin book at 198 pages but is absolutely jam packed with the information you need and very little fluff.
