LUSH Ocean Salt Facial Scrub

LUSH Ocean Salt Facial Scrub

I continue to be more and more impressed by facial skincare from LUSH, a brand I only ever revered for bath and body care. After the sadly limited edition Buche de Noël Solid Cleanser from last Christmas and now this, I'm becoming a bit of a convert to say the least.

Lush Ocean Salt Facial Scrub 1 LUSH Ocean Salt Facial Scrub

Lush Ocean Salt Facial Scrub 4 LUSH Ocean Salt Facial Scrub

I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times – I love a good scrub. I like a granule exfoliator that has a high scrub:base ration and this is definitely that with a blend if both fine and coarse sea salt. You may be thinking, “well surely that's too much scrub?” but no I say! No! It's just the right amount and doesn't leave my skin gagging for moisture.

With the salt for exfoliation, it's balanced with a nourishing and non-congesting base of organic coconut oil and avocado butter, nourishing and conditioning the skin as you go.

There's also conditioning violet leaf extract and oil-balancing seaweed absolute, adding another treatment element to this black pot of magic.

The smell, oh the smell! You open the lid and get a hit of the sea weaving through the mouth-watering juices of skin-brightening, fresh, organic lime – extracted using Vodka. I found an article on the process here and it sounds delicious. This is then curbed by the slight sweetness of the coconut oil and richness of the avocado butter.

Just throw a generous dollop onto damp skin, massage in slowly and gently (avoiding the eye area) and then rinse off; your skin will feel like porcelain and your moisturiser will sink in like a dream.

At only £6.95 for a 100g tub or £12.95 for a 250g tub, you're hardly breaking the bank with this and getting a real quality treatment. Check it out here on the LUSH website.

REN Clarifying Toning Lotion

REN Clarifying Toning Lotion

A great new product from REN and finally, a great natural and effective alternative to one of my favourite products in the world. It feels completely neutral on the skin but leaves it feeling smooth and ready for moisture.

REN Clarifying Toning Lotion 2 11 REN Clarifying Toning Lotion

Designed for a combination to combination/oily skin type, this gentle chemical exfoliator uses a natural form of salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid). Salicylic acid these days is artificially engineered and is actually chemically very similar to aspirin.

The original and expensive to obtain form of salicylic acid is a willow extract and is exactly what you'll find in REN Clarifying Toning Lotion. Salicylic acid is a wonderful ingredient as it exfoliates by breaking down the bonds of dead skin cells and the sweeping motion of your cotton pad, gentle and effectively brushes them away.

This gentle water also uses the power of glycolic acid (pineapple), lactic acid (passion fruit), citric acid (lemon) and tartaric acid (grapes) all work together with salicylic acid to thoroughly and gently decongest the pores and remove dead skin cells. Flavinoids, extracted from Mayblossom, help to kill off excess bacteria as well as toning the pores and reducing excess oil production.

As well as these powerful natural active ingredients there's also calming Lavender flower water, known for its anti-bacterial properties; peppermint, an anti-bacterial known to condition and tone the skin; Bergamot leaf extract which is cooling and oil-balancing.

For Acne and blemish concerns, you should always avoid using manual exfoliation (scrubs and beads) as you can risk breaking the skin, which can lead to scarring as well as spreading the infection; however, you still need to exfoliate. Therefore you should really consider chemical exfoliants to gently remove the pore-blocking, dead skin cells and to kill off excess p.Acne (spot causing) bacteria.

Apply a small amount of the liquid onto a cotton pad and wipe once over the face, avoiding the eye area. With any chemical exfoliators, you shouldn't go over the same area twice as this can over-exfolaite the skin; so no vigorous rubbing.

I can't really stress enough how neutral this feels on the skin, to the point that you don't really think it's doing much, but when it comes to applying your moisturiser you'll notice how much more effectively it sinks in. After only one week of use, I'd discontinued using any other forms of exfoliation and found that my skin still felt as it should and as it usually does.

REN Clarifying Toning Lotion is £18 and available here from Mankind. A bottle this size should last you a good few months as you only need the tiniest amount for each use. If you've already started using this or have some REN recommendations, please let me know by dropping a comment.

Sampar Equalizing Foam Peel

Sampar Equalizing Foam Peel

It's official but if you caught my exclusive then you'll already know that on the 2nd May, Sampar will launch here in the UK at M&S Beauty and it's already live over at Feel Unique. Sampar Equalizing Foam Peel is a brand new offering from the brand and I think you're going to like it.

Sampar2 Sampar Equalizing Foam Peel

Sampar3 Sampar Equalizing Foam Peel

Sampar4 Sampar Equalizing Foam Peel

The first thing however, even though I looove Sampar, they insist on stamping their boxes with the word “Essentials”. I'm certain this is a language crossover problem and that the brand believe that by calling it an essential, you think oh I need this as part of my core regime. In actual fact, using the same word to describe a €55 chemical exfoliator that is most often used on budget priced digestive biscuits and water-inflated chicken seems rather incongruous. Am I alone in this? Anyway.

So for guys, this product could not be better suited. Most men I know do not exfoliate. It is the absolute key to better, healthier and more manageable skin but is step most often overlooked. The Sampar Equalizing Foam Peel could not be easier and is so cleverly effective. Use it 2-3 times a week and all you need to do is when you hop in the shower, splash your face with water, rub 2-3 pumps of the product into your skin then wash it off 2 minutes later, giving you time in-between to go about your other shower business.

With a blend of conditioning essential oils, probiotic enzymes and the Sampar Urban Advance Complex. Rather than using anything quite as attacking as say, Salicylic Acid, it's actually the probiotic enzymes that naturally loosen and exfoliate surface dead skin cells that come away through the process of rinsing the product away with your hands/sponge/brush etc. I can't stress enough how easy this product is to use.

On first use it doesn't give you the immediate effect of using a manual exfoliator with scrubs, beads or grains, but over the course of a week using it 2-3 times, you'll see the same effects, in fact more so. It's much gentler on the skin and even though from time to time I love a good scrub, I prefer to use and recommend chemical exfoliation. It does contain sulfates but this time it's TEA Lauryl Sulfate which is a much milder alternative to Sodium Laureth Sulfate. The product is also 100% artificially fragrance free.

I really recommend this if you're wanting a quick but highly effective way to exfoliate. Currently you can pick it up from online from Feel Unique for £48 with free delivery.

versace My Favourites for Spring 2013

Versace Eros

You can read my full review for Versace Eros here, but this is definitely my favourite for spring. It's light, sweet, fresh but with a solid base that let's everyone know you mean business. My favourite feature notes are the Madagascan vanilla flower and deliciously fresh apple. Versace's first men's fragrance launch in over 5 years, this is not to be missed.  Grab it here from House of Fraser

ren My Favourites for Spring 2013

Ren Bio Retinoid Anti-Ageing Cream

A brand new addition to REN's anti-aging armoury, this is the perfect tool to kick your skin back into gear after our miserable winer. It’s a day and night cream and the first thing I’ve fallen in love with is how well it hydrates. It really just tears its way through dryness and seems to almost immediately plump and lift everything. Retinoid Analogue, the first clean alternative to retinol, increases skin cell turnover, leaving newer fresher cells on the surface whilst inhibiting collagen breakdown, thus overall reducing fine lines and wrinkles. You can pick it up for £42.00 here from Space.NK, use SNKHARR for free delivery. Read my full review here.

Clinique Clarifying Lotion

A product at the source of much controversy, but one of my favourite exfoliators of all time. It's all about how you use it and remember this isn't a toner. Use only one spot of the liquid on a cotton pad and sweep across the whole face, never going over the same area twice and avoiding the eye area. If you soak the pad and go at it like a bat out of hell, you are going to cause yourself a few problems. Gentle, twice-daily exfoliation is my biggest recommendation to keeping your skin glowing, unblocked and blemish-free, whilst allowing your treatment products to get to work much more effectively. Make sure you use the right formulation for you. You can have an online consultation and pick up your own bottle here from Clinique.

lamer gelcleanse My Favourites for Spring 2013

Crème de la Mer The Cleansing Gel

Until now I was using The Cleansing Foam, but not religiously and only when I was feeling particularly oily and in need of a deep clean. I’d say The Cleansing Foam is suited more to an oily skin type whereas I’d say The Cleansing Gel is great for normal to combination feeling much softer and gentler yet still thorough. It gives a really gentle yet deep cleanse.

Utilising both the Miracle Broth and the power of deconstructed waters, the wash both calms, softens and gets to work at loosening surface dead skin cells. This then allows your exfoliator to remove these dead cells more effectively, ultimately resulting in deep hydration from your moisturiser. I have to add that with this, you only need the tiniest amount. It's a truly luxurious cleanser and is available here from John Lewis.

loccitane My Favourites for Spring 2013

Immortelle Brightening Mist

I'm yet to publish my complete review, but this is definitely the spring/summer travel essential. Part of L'Occitane's incredible Immortelle skincare collection. It's a toner that can be used morning and night after cleansing, but also as an on-the-go refresher for when you're feeling a bit hot and bothered.

Dermatologically and ophthalmologically tested, just get spraying. With the brightening properties of daisy flower, the conditioning effects of Immortelle flower extract and witch hazel, this both tones, calms and de-greases. The mist is incredibly fine and creates a gentle cloud rather than a heavy spray. You can get yours for £15 here from L'Occitane.

Clinique 3 Step Skincare System: 2 Dry Combination

Clinique 3 Step Skincare System: 2 Dry Combination

After a fantastic consultation at Manchester's Selfridges, Exchange Square, I was shocked to learn that for the first time in my life, the perfect Clinique system for me is Number 2 – Dry Combination. Most of my life I've used Clinique's Anti-Blemish solutions, but over the last year my skin seems to have finally vanquished its spotty outbreaks, at last. Being allergy tested and 100% fragrance free, Clinique claim that in just two weeks, I'll have ”that famous Clinique glow… watch your skin become softer, smoother, more radiant—instantly and over time.” Clinique do a men's range that is slightly stronger but it looked like the traditional range was the best thing for me.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion 1 Clinique 3 Step Skincare System: 2 Dry Combination

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion 3 copy Clinique 3 Step Skincare System: 2 Dry Combination

The Dry Combination system is the most commonly sold system in the brand and the yellow Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion is an iconic, cult product. I'm going to be trying this system over the next two weeks, along with some of Clinique's treatment products which I'll be posting about as I go, and seeing how my skin feels at the end of the trial. Even though I can be lazy on some evenings, I'm going to do my full regime both morning and night, which I'm told shouldn't take any longer than 3 minutes.

Liquid Facial Soap Mild

I've continue to say how much I like a good face wash, something that foams and effectively cleanses without leaving my skin dry or tight. It really leaves my skin soft and Clinique claim this is the first important step in loosening dead skin cells and dislodging dirt, ready for the next step.

Clarifying Lotion 2

Clarifying lotion gets a lot of bad press and whenever I talk about it here or on twitter I'm sounded out by people telling me that it's over abrasive, it strips paint, all that horse garbage. Well funnily enough, if you douse your cotton pad in it, and work it over your face like a toner, rubbing and scrubbing, then you're going to over-exfoliate, whether with this, or any other exfoliating liquid. The important thing to bear in mind when using it is it's one or two flicks onto a pressed down cotton bad or cotton wool ball and a quick sweep over the face, never going over the same area twice. It's one of, if not the most popular product from the brand, so not everyone can be wrong, can they?

The formulation actually changed in 2009 when Clinique decided that because of the big environmental changes since it's launch in 1968 more hydrating ingredients needed to be added. The formula relies mainly on the exfoliating properties of salicylic acid, combined with the conditioning properties of witch hazel and menthol, hydrating with hyaluronic acid and trehalose.

It feels fantastically refreshing on the face and by gently removing the dead layers of skin, it really allows your moisturiser to absorb more easily. There's a great test Clinique show on counter with the Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion, massaging it into a hand that has been clarified, and the other that hasn't. On the hand that hasn't, it foams up and sits on the surface, feeling a bit greasy and gross, but on the other, it completely sinks in and my hand is left so soft.

Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion

There's very little I can say about this product that hasn't already been said in over 40 years. It's the granddaddy of all moisturisers, we all know it. It's pretty boring-looking, it has no sun-screen, no promises of anti-ageing benefits so why is it so popular? Clinique claim that this is the closest thing their dermatologists could get to of the skin's natural oil and water and this is exactly what it is.

The principal behind the yellow peril is that when the skin is balanced with oil and water, it becomes highly responsive to any treatments layered over the top. I remember this from my mum's dressing table for as long as I can remember, in fact she still uses it, even if she uses treatment products from another brand, it all comes down to a base of Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion.

Using one to two pumps, rub between your finger ends and pat first in the areas that you have dryness, in my case, the cheeks. Then with what's left, apply it to the rest of the skin. Providing you've done the first two steps, I think you'll be as gobsmacked as I was as to how quickly it disappeared into the skin. Let's see how this goes. If you want to join me, you can pick up all the products and take your own custom-fit consultation online here over at Clinique.

Strivectin-SD Instant Retexturizing Scrub

Strivectin-SD Instant Retexturizing Scrub

Inside the large box, ladened with scientific jargon, you'll discover an incredible exfoliator, a truly fabulous product.

Strivectin SD Instant Retexturizing Scrub 2 Strivectin SD Instant Retexturizing Scrub

Strivectin SD Instant Retexturizing Scrub 1 Strivectin SD Instant Retexturizing Scrub

I can't start this review without mentioning the box, I do find it a bit silly, but I can't stress enough how much of a wonderful product it is. On the back, it talks about engineering the formula with NIA-114™, “discovered in DNA skin cancer research to accelerate the rebuilding of skin layers” with no mention of how or why to be seen anywhere. It also features my pet-hate phrases such as younger and healthier looking skin. After a little research NIA-114™ is actually a vitamin B3 delivery system, this aids to boost the skin's natural repair functions.

The product is wonderfully stiff and firm, you really have to give the tube a good squeeze. There's almost no scent (definitely non added artificially) which is great for those of you who are more sensitive. The exfoliating particles, jojoba beads, are very powerful in this but are softened by the thick cream base. I find this is best applied to damp skin, where you'll discover how well it adheres giving you plenty of pliability and time to work.

Rinsed off and dried off, you'll inevitably notice how bright your complexion is, pores are noticeably unblocked and your skin is left feeling silky to the touch but importantly, calm and soothed. Now the majority of your barrier of surface dead skin cells have been removed, you'll enjoy how easily your moisturiser of choice sinks in.

A great manual exfoliator, powerful yet kind. You only need the tiniest amount so a 100ml tube will last for quite a while to say the least. Use twice weekly, morning or night although I recommend using it at night as it will enhance your skin's ability to regenerate which occurs as you sleep.

You can pick Strivectin-SD Instant Retexturizing Scrub up here at Space.NK. Use the trusty code, SNKHARR, at the checkout to get free delivery.

Clarins Gentle Refiner Exfoliating Cream with Microbeads

Clarins Gentle Refiner Exfoliating Cream with Microbeads

This is one of my favourite, luxurious exfoliators with tiny Microbeads suspended in a gentle cream base with extracts of Mimosa Tenuiflora and Elderberry.

Clarins Gentle Refiner Exfoliating Cream 2 Clarins Gentle Refiner Exfoliating Cream with Microbeads

Despite Clarins recommending application onto damp skin, I find it's best to apply this product onto dry skin, massaging the cream quite gently, concentrating particularly on the T-Zone, then rinsing off.

Use only about the size of a ten pence piece as a little goes an incredibly long way. Don't work fast with this product, not that you should take an age, but exfoliation should be a gentle process, avoiding that rapid, seemingly life or death, speed that a lot of us guys tend to operate with.

I find this has a dense bead-to-cream ratio, more so than a lot of other cream exfoliators that can sometimes feel like you get one bead ever 5cm of so; are you with me on this? You're left feeling incredibly smooth but because of the softness of the cream base, you aren't left feeling as if someone has tied bungee chords to the sides of your face.

The smell is amazing, with that beautiful Clarins soapy skincare fragrance, reminding me a little of the Foaming Facial Wash with Cotton seed which is a must try for anyone with oily / combination skin (review coming soon).

If you're looking for a more gentle yet effective way to exfoliate then I think you'll enjoy this. If you've used it before or end up doing so, drop me a comment. You can pick this up here, direct from Clarins.

Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse Off Formula

Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse Off Formula

Almost anyone who has any interest in beauty whatsoever has tried this product. Given away with almost every Clinique Bonus Time gift, the Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse Off Formula is the grandmother of exfoliators, I don't know why it's a woman, I think maybe because it's efficient and powerful perhaps? It's perfect for guys with a normal to dry skin type.

This product is almost as classic as the famously yellow Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion, and I believe this, or a tub form of it, launched in the late 70′s (if you know the exact launch, drop me a comment).

With a gentle cream base, this highly effective exfoliator is best applied onto dry skin before stepping in the shower, hence the name “Rinse Off Formula”.

Using only a small amount, work it gently into the skin, focusing on the forehead, nose, chin and beard area. It feels strange at first and like a thick moisturiser, but when rinsed off, your skin feels like silk.

We now know why it's called “Rinse Off Formula”, but why is it called “7 Day Scrub”? Well, it's so gentle that it can be used every day, 7 days a week. Normally you should use it less frequently if your skin is normal to oily, but for those drier skin types, put it to the test. I find every other evening is absolutely perfect as I use exfoliators in my toners and moisturisers and it's very easy to go too far.

A classic and a favourite of so many. You can pick it up direct from Clinique here.

1 Ted Baker Grooming

[one_half]I'm always dubious when fashion lines launch their own range of skincare, very dubious indeed and hearing of the new Ted Baker – Ted's Grooming Room line really got me polishing and sharpening my beauty knives.

Well after trying the products, my weapons are away as I have been unbelievably impressed. The products I tried are higher quality than companies who've specialised in skin[/one_half][one_half_last] from the very beginning. Inspired by the grooming practices of the Ottoman Empire, the range has been lovingly produced by KMI, who also produce Dr. Linda Papadopoulos' own skincare as well as Orla Kelly and Fish.

I got my mitts on both the Face Scrub and Shave Cream which are each other's perfect partners and have used the two quite thoroughly over the last week or so.[/one_half_last]

TED BAKER Face Scrub

I love it when facial scrubs are powerful, because you always have the option to work them in very gently, whereas when a face scrub is weak and bead-less, you're sort of stuck. This is not the latter, but instead a wonderfully invigorating and high-strength face scrub that[/one_half][one_half_last] both smooths and cleanses, leaves your pores completely unblocked.

I like the fact it doesn't foam as it gets to work, meaning that as it scrubs away dead skin cells, it doesn't break down the moisture barrier wish harsh surfactants and cleansing agents and the exfoliating jojoba beads mean that cells are buffed away rather then scraped.[/one_half_last]

TED BAKER Shave Cream

I knew this would be a deliciously dense shave cream just by feeling the weight of the bottle! It's a pump dispenser rather than a pressurised container and comes out as a rich, pearlised cream that as you work into the skin, starts to[/one_half][one_half_last] thicken leaving a rich mask of foam. Many shaving foams start to slop off almost immediately, but this one stayed very firmly.

I applied it over the Billy Jealousy Hot Towel Pre-Shave Treatment which gives a really smooth base, definitely worth a try.[/one_half_last]

I'm really impressed with this offering from almighty fashion house that is Ted Baker. Oh and linking in with the fashion line itself, I’ve recently become a fan of Zalando. The Ted Baker range on Zalando is amazing, they stock all of Ted Baker´s latest creations. I was wondering how to share that with you but I guess this is the most opportune moment I'll ever have! I've got my eye on the Ted Baker SKOLDAY bag. Christmas present anyone?

Ren Micro Polish Cleanser

Ren Micro Polish Cleanser

Ren Micro Polish Cleanser 2 Ren Micro Polish Cleanser

Well after getting back from the blistering, Barcelona sun, my skin was looking tanned but feeling grim and a little dull as my thickened epidermis began to dry out slightly. It was time to get my glow back.

Now REN have long since been a producer of potent, effective treatments designed for most skin concerns and types. Lucky was I, that their Radiance range was on hand – particularly, the REN Micro Polish Cleanser.

Locked and loaded with Mexican Papaya, an exfoliant and anti-inflammatory, Glycolic Acid extracted from Pineapple, breaking down the bonds of surface dead skin cells and finally Microbeads of Amber, acting as a powerful physical exfoliator. There's also Orange, Bergamot, Tangerine, Grape and Lemon oils, which give it a great fragrance as well as brightening benefits.

The Ren Micro Polish Cleanser appears out of the tube with an almost clay / soufflé texture that as you begin to gently press and work into the skin feels like it's doing the job – don't go too rough with this. Rarely I find physical exfoliators instantly brighten as well as this. I sat down in front of the mirror once I'd been in the shower after first use and was genuinely and whole-heartedly surprised at how instantly smooth and bright my skin looked.

Make sure you apply a moisturiser almost right away, the reason being, you've just exposed all the new skin cells on the top levels of your Stratum Corneum; these fresh and juicy cells will start to expel moisture almost immediately, so protect them.
